Before You Go: The Basics
Jet skiing is one of the most exhilarating water sports you can try, and the good news is that it's surprisingly easy to learn. Most first-time riders are comfortable within the first 10-15 minutes on the water.
Our Sea-Doo Spark 3up is specifically designed to be beginner-friendly. It's nimble, responsive, and forgiving. Perfect for learning the ropes while still delivering plenty of fun.
What You Need to Know
- No license required: No boating license is required in Arizona to operate a jet ski.
- Age requirements: Renters must be 21+. Operators 16+ can drive while a 21+ renter is on site.
- Fuel: Every ski goes out full. Just bring it back full; you only pay for the fuel you use.
- Deposit: A $500 refundable security deposit holds every rental.
- Swimming ability: While life jackets are always worn, basic swimming ability is recommended.
Start early in the morning when the water is calmest. You'll have smoother conditions for learning and avoid the afternoon crowds.
Safety First: Essential Rules
Safety is our top priority, and it should be yours too. Here are the non-negotiables:
Always Wear Your Life Jacket
This isn't optional. It's the law and common sense. We provide USCG-approved life jackets that are comfortable enough to wear all day. Keep it on from the moment you leave the dock until you return.
Attach the Safety Lanyard
The safety lanyard connects to your wrist or life jacket and to the jet ski's kill switch. If you fall off, it automatically shuts down the engine. Never ride without it attached.
Maintain Safe Distances
- Stay at least 100 feet from other watercraft, swimmers, and docks
- Slow down in no-wake zones and near shore
- Be extra cautious around fishing boats, since they may have lines in the water
Never operate a jet ski under the influence of alcohol. It's illegal, dangerous, and will result in immediate termination of your rental.
Riding Basics: How to Operate
Starting & Stopping
Our Sea-Doo Spark 3up uses a simple push-button start. Once the engine is running, you control speed with the throttle on the right handlebar: squeeze to accelerate, release to slow down.
Jet skis don't have brakes like a car. To stop, simply release the throttle and the water resistance will slow you down. For quicker stops, turn the handlebars while releasing the throttle.
Steering
Here's the most important thing to remember: you must be on the throttle to steer effectively. Unlike a car, a jet ski uses water thrust for steering. If you release the throttle completely, you'll continue in the direction you were going regardless of where you point the handlebars.
This catches many beginners off guard. If you need to avoid something, don't let go of the throttle. Maintain some power while steering away.
Turning
Start with gentle, wide turns and work your way up to sharper maneuvers as you gain confidence. Lean slightly into your turns like you would on a bicycle. The Spark 3up is very responsive, so small handlebar movements create big results.
Throttle = steering control. Never panic and release the throttle when you need to turn away from something. Keep some power on!
Your First Time on the Water
The Orientation
Before you hit the water, we'll give you a 15-minute orientation covering everything in this guide plus specifics about the Spark 3up. Don't be afraid to ask questions. There are no dumb ones when it comes to safety.
Start Slow
Spend your first 10-15 minutes getting comfortable at low speeds. Practice gentle acceleration, releasing the throttle, and making wide turns. Once you feel stable, gradually increase your speed.
Falling Off
It happens to everyone, especially beginners. It's not a big deal! The jet ski will idle or shut off (thanks to the safety lanyard), and you can easily climb back on using the rear boarding platform. Approach from the back, not the side.
Arizona Lake Tips
Our local lakes have some specific considerations:
- Sun protection: Arizona sun is intense. Wear sunscreen (waterproof SPF 50+), sunglasses with a strap, and consider a rash guard.
- Hydration: Bring plenty of water. You'll be more active than you realize, and dehydration sneaks up fast.
- Wildlife: At Saguaro Lake, you may see wild horses along the shore. Keep your distance and don't approach them.
- Water levels: Check current lake levels, especially at Canyon Lake where underwater obstacles can appear during low water periods.
You're Ready!
That's everything you need to know for your first jet ski adventure. Remember: start slow, stay safe, and have fun. After a few minutes on the water, you'll wonder why you waited so long to try this!
